From Rankine-Hugoniot Condition to a Constructive Derivation of HDG Methods

چکیده
This chapter presents a constructive derivation of HDG methods for convection-diffusion-reaction equation using the Rankine-Hugoniot condition. This is possible due to the fact that, in the first order form, convection-diffusion-reaction equation is a hyperbolic system. As such it can be discretized using the standard upwind DG method. The key is to realize that the Rankine-Hugoniot condition naturally provides an upwind HDG framework. The chief idea is to first break the uniqueness of the upwind flux across element boundaries by introducing singlevalued new trace unknowns on the mesh skeleton, and then re-enforce the uniqueness via algebraic conservation constraints. Essentially, the HDG framework is a redesign of the standard DG approach to reduce the number of coupled unknowns. In this work, an upwind HDG method with one trace unknown is systematically constructed, and then extended to a family of penalty HDG schemes. Various existing HDG methods are rediscovered using the proposed framework.

A central Rankine-Hugoniot solver for hyperbolic conservation laws
A numerical method in which the Rankine-Hugoniot condition is enforced at the discrete level is developed. The simple format of central discretization in a finite volume method is used together with the jump condition to develop a simple and yet accurate numerical method free of Riemann solvers and complicated flux splittings. The steady discontinuities are captured accurately by this numerical...

The modified Rankine-Hugoniot equations across a standing normal shockwave were discussed and adapted to obtain jump conditions for shockwave structure calculations. Coupling the modified Rankine-Hugoniot equations with the Burnett equations, the shockwave structure in a weakly ionized gas flow was computed and analyzed for a wide range of free-stream Mach numbers ranging from 1.75 to 6.0, with...

متن کاملHopf Bifurcation From Viscous Shock Waves
Using spatial dynamics, we prove a Hopf bifurcation theorem for viscous Lax shocks in viscous conservation laws. The bifurcating viscous shocks are unique (up to time and space translation), exponentially localized in space, periodic in time, and their speed satisfies the Rankine–Hugoniot condition. We also prove an ”exchange of spectral stability” result for superand subcritical bifurcations, ...

Isentropic stress reverberations are used to obtain multiple Hugoniot states from a single plate impact experiment using a layered plate geometry, where a low impedance inner layer is embedded within a high impedance bulk structure. The mathematical framework used in this technique uses the classical Rankine-Hugoniot equations in the method of impedance matching, where the bulk material is requ...
